Huge win for our campaign to get The Oaklands area of Welwyn included in Arriva’s Welwyn Hatfield Zone. This area has been excluded for years, meaning residents paid up to 70% more for bus tickets than people less than a mile away. On an annual ticket, the difference was hundreds of pounds. Oaklands was not in any zone, unfairly excluded from the discount enjoyed by the rest of Welwyn.
When Oaklands resident Samantha Brett raised the issue with the Welwyn Hatfield Times last summer, I began a campaign to change this unfair state of affairs. I raised questions at County Hall, and got the answer “it’s not up to us, it’s a commercial decision.”
So I began badgering Arriva. It took several months, and the threat of public demonstrations and a sustained media campaign, but they finally agreed to re-draw the arbitrary zone boundary, that used to end at The Clock roundabout.
Big thanks to Samantha for raising the issue, and to Christina Raven for her help in Welwyn and Oaklands.
